Below is a list of questions frequently asked about Nu-Glaze window glazing beading solutions. We will keep expanding the list as more questions arise.

1: How difficult is it to remove Nu-GlazeRonce fitted and cured?

A: Extremely difficult to do so without breaking the glass – this is an excellent security feature. Provided that the complete Nu-GlazeR  profile has been used with the correct amount and placement of silicone.

2: Can I use Nu-GlazeR on my very old style steel windows (old frame profiles)?

A: Yes, just ensure a flat surface (perpendicular to the glass) after you have removed the putty, some old frames have a recess that allowed for more putty to “grip”. If necessary, use automotive bodyfiller to fill the shallow recess, alternatively,  if you start removing the putty and you see there is a recess, try to retain the putty in the recess and only remove the rest.  It is highly recommended that the rebate offers a 90 degree, clean, intact surface to enable the silicone to seat and cure properly.

3: Do I need to remove the glass and all the putty, even though the inside putty is still perfect?

A: No, if you can’t or don’t want to, you can only remove the outer putty and then silicone the triangular outer section of Nu-GlazeR  that can easily be torn/broken off on the score line provided.

4: The upright L-section (also called the toe) of  Nu-GlazeR is 13mm, what if my frame rebates  is only 10mm high?

A: There is another score line provided to enable you to tear/break off the top 3mm if the frame rebate only allows for 10mm.

5: Can Nu-GlazeR  be used for any other purpose?

A: Yes, if the outer section has been torn/broken off, it is perfect to be used as a neat “quarter round”.  In kitchens or bathrooms and where wet conditions requires a water and mold resistant material to neatly finish 90 degree corners. The hollow underneath can even be used as trunking for thin wires or pipes, etc.    Nu-GlazeR  can be used anywhere where a panel – wood, glass, board, acrylic, metal, plastic or anything else needs to be secured into a frame of some sorts or even on a flat surface.

6: Can I use any type of silicone or adhesive?

A: Nu-GlazeR600 Neutral cure silicone has been chosen and tested because it yielded the best results – especially in terms of reaction between the silicone and the frame material.  Neutral cure has a low odour, quick curing and very strong bonding features and is highly UV resistant. If you use any other type of adhesive, we cannot guarantee the same results as we have experienced thus far. Some adhesives may contain chemicals that may be harmful to PVC, causing material failure.

7: With what can I paint Nu-GlazeR  if I want to?

A: First give the surface a slight key with some very fine grit sanding paper, then use a PVC primer.   When completely dry, you may re-paint with any paint of your choice.   We have experienced the best results with acrylic based paints.

8: How do I measure to make sure that I have sufficient material?

A: Most windows are rectangular or square, so just measure the long leg and the short leg, times that by 2 and add 50mm per corner to allow for the cutting of the miters. Round up rather than down to avoid having too little material.  Nu-GlazeR comes in 2,0m lengths.

9: What if the glass breaks?

A: It is relatively easy to remove the beading once the glass is removed (by pulling and removing remaining shards and pieces) and by cutting at the silicone while simultaneously lifting the beading off and away from the frame (which is not possible with the glass intact).

By doing this slowly, the beading can be removed in one piece, and properly cleaned of residual silicone. New glass can then be inserted and the beading can be used again. Due to this feature, Nu-GlazeR  also provides an added security measure for the homeowner.  Putty and wooden beading strips are relatively easy to remove with the glass still intact to offer easy access for burglars and the likes.

10: What if the gasket/beading discolours over a long period of time?

A: It can be painted in any colour with any paint – after being properly primed first, of course.

11: What if someone or something breaks the surface facing to the outside?

A: Due to the double exterior wall, it will have to be a reasonably hard blow to cause a break and subsequent loss of grip on the glass. Such a hard blow will probably break the glass as well. But in the case of just the outer wall being penetrated or damaged, the inner structure and the silicone will still hold the glass in place. To repair, plastic welding can be successfully used to fix the damage.

12. If I need Nu-GlazeR in lengths that will suit my specifications, can I order so?

A: Yes, provided that a minimum order quantity will apply.

13. Would Nu-GlazeR 600 be strong enough to hold the glass and gasket/beading in place for years and years?

A: Absolutely, 25 year tests run in the Arizona desert has shown Silicone as the only adhesive that did not loose it’s original strengths and tough characteristics. Nu-GlazeR 600 is top quality, construction grade silicone (made in Germany) and have passed our own 5 year tests (and still going strong). We have done a test window in one of our country’s most prominent prisons and needless to say, the guests hates Nu-Glaze! It won’t budge!  Recently, we have had our system tested against SANS 613 and again, needless to say, it passed the criteria set for residential housing standards by far. The rapports of which are in the process of being drawn up.

14. Can I use any miter box?

A: Yes, but we have designed (and patented) a specially shaped miter tool, called the Miter Buddy and it is best to get the 45, 50 and 60 degree one, for you will probably need them all for the best results. See the installation Guide and/or Video why. If budgets are tight, you can get away with just the 45 degree Miter Buddy.  The Miter Buddy will ensure accurate cutting and very handy as it holds the profile in place while you do the cut.

15. Where and how can I buy Nu-GlazeR ?

Our main depot is in Cape Town. We will quote you as per your requirements and after you accepted, we invoice you and after payment has been made, we will send your order. Easy and safely.
